Unlocking Creativity: How to Solve Any Problem and Make the Best Decisions by Shifting Creative Mindsets

From the Inside Flap

Creativity is an elusive but essential component of innovation and success in competitive, changing markets. The old way of thinking had it that creativity was a kind of mystical property possessed only by certain innately talented people. If an organization wasn't innovative enough, its leaders simply needed to find and hire those rare creative people. The past few decades of constant disruption by newcomers has roundly proven this theory false, even if organizational leaders don't recognize it yet. Years of trying to recruit and retain creative workforces just hasn't helped the established players keep up. If hiring creativity isn't helping, it means that organizations have all the creativity they need but aren't harnessing it properly. What's going wrong? Some people point to the pressure to keep shareholders happy and to other external pressures, claiming that market forces prevent them from giving creativity the space to develop. But the supersonic rise of companies like Netflix and Amazon show that market forces aren't stopping the people who really know how to innovate. In Unlocking Creativity, Michael A. Roberto draws on years of investigation to reveal the true nature of the problem: enterprise-wide mindsets that stifle creativity on a daily basis. Every organization is full of creative minds just waiting for an opportunity to shine. Unfortunately, deeply entrenched organizational cultures and ways of thinking frustrate people when they try to present original ideas. Without knowing it, we may be falling victim to one of the six mindsets that prevent talented people from experimenting, discovering, innovating and helping the organization flourish. Unlocking Creativity presents the six mindsets that block creativity, bringing them to life through colorful examples and abundant research evidence, to help leaders recognize the habits that might be preventing creativity from taking flight. With illustrations taken from far and wide—academic research, corporate case studies, hit TV shows, and rock and roll legends all make eye-opening appearances in the pages of this book—Michael Roberto clears the fog around creativity and equips leaders with the insight they need to shift to supportive mindsets and cultures where creativity can thrive.

“We have perplexing problems to solve in education, healthcare, and poverty.” Michael Roberto makes a compelling argument for the dire need for creativity in his latest book. In it, he explores the six organizational mindsets that must be reshaped for individuals to accomplish their creative potential. These include: ● The Linear Mindset ● The Benchmarking Mindset ● The Prediction Mindset ● The Structural Mindset ● The Focus Mindset ● The Naysayer MindsetThrough timely and relevant case studies, Roberto demonstrates that when you “Trust your people, remove the hurdles, and bold and original ideas will come forth.”I was excited to read this book. It presents insightful ideas that inspired me to critically evaluate the belief systems in my organization. I raced through Unlocking Creativity, and finished it in less than a day. I highly recommend giving this book a read. I’m convinced that you will be inspired to think differently about how your team can experiment, learn, and discover.

Michael Roberto obviously agrees with Tom and David Kelley who, in Creative Confidence, challenge all manner of misconceptions, such as the common refrain "I'm just not creative." In fact, they suggest, "As brothers who have worked together for thirty years at the forefront of innovation, we have come to see this set of misconceptions as 'the creativity myth.' It is a myth that far too many people share. This book is about the opposite of that myth. It is about what we call 'creative confidence.' And at its foundation is the belief that we are [begin italics] all [end italics] creative...Creative confidence is a way of seeing that potential and your place in the world more clearly, unclouded by anxiety and doubt. We hope you'll join us on our quest to embrace creative confidence in our lives. Together, we can all make the world a better place."According to Roberto, leaders at all levels "should not focus simply on finding 'better' people, but instead remove the obstacles that impede the creativity of the talented individuals already in their midst. The best leaders acknowledge that they might not have the creative solutions to their organization's most significant challenges. They seek to marshal the collective intellect of their people and unleash the creative capabilities of those around them. These leaders embrace the responsibility to create a supportive environment and dismantle the barriers to creativity. This book aims to help leaders in this mission to build more creative enterprises." whatever the size and nature the given organization may be.He focuses on six creativity-inhibiting mindsets and devotes a separate chapter to each:1. Linear: Locked into only one process (analysis, ideation, and execution)2. Benchmarking: Adopts copycat approaches without modification3. Prediction: Self-fulfilling prophecy precludes resiliency4. Structural: Locks in execution to predetermined sequence of actions5. Focus: Precludes consideration of options, alternatives, and "BIG picture" perspective6. Naysayer: Dissent and other contrarian approaches discourage underdeveloped, potentially good ideasKeep in mind that each of these mindsets is best suited to complete specific tasks, such as linear when changing a flat tire, prediction when engaged in contingency planning or focus when completing an organ transplant. For some people, if all they have is a hammer, however, every problem looks like a nail. Fortunately, Roberto provides a "toolbox" of mindsets, each of which involves different skills to achieve different objectives. Ted Levitt also reminds us that “people don’t want quarter-inch drills. They want quarter-inch holes.” I wish everyone in retail (especially those who work at hardware stores such as Home Depot and Lowes) understood that distinction. For other important insights about all this, I highly recommend checking out Jennifer Riel and Roger Martin's Creating Great Choices as well as Edward de Bono's Six Thinking Hats. These are among the passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of Roberto's coverage:o Closed Mind Experts (Pages 5-9)o Design Thinking Flourishes (28-31)o The Benchmarking Curse (47-51)o Nobody Knows Anything (68-71)o Does Hierarchy Help or Hurt? (90-94)o Shaping Team Climate (97-101)o When the Tank Runs Dry (118-121)o The Devil's Advocate (138-141)o Who Plays the Devil's Advocate? (143-147)o Encourage Questions, and, Let Them Answer (162-166)o Introduce Novelty (172-174)These are among Michael Roberto's concluding thoughts: "Your team members and colleagues have a tremendous capacity. Never forget that. As leaders, you must marshal the collective intellect of your people...You must nourish the innate curiosity of your colleagues. You need to dismantle the barriers and transform the mindsets that impede others' creativity." One of his most valuable insights is that all of us must think creatively about how to become more creative. This is a "must read" for those who are determined to accelerate their personal growth and professional development. Meanwhile, why not help as many others as possible to do that? If you share my high regard for this book, re-read it...and then purchase copies for the colleagues who you think will gain the greatest benefit from it. "Together, we can all make the world a better place."

As a follower of Michael's work for 13+ years, I've come to appreciate how he can break down complex business situations in a very teachable way. I had the opportunity to discuss "Unlocking Creativity" directly with the author and it's clear that parts of this book are very research and data-driven. Michael always does a fantastic job calling on his immense Rolodex of contacts he's built teaching across the world from Harvard to Japan to Bryant University. I'd recommend this book to anyone wishing to better understand creativity, problem-solving, or business strategy.

I was attracted to the book by the promise on the cover to "solve any problem and make the best decisions", and read the book based on the recommendation of a co-worker.I did enjoy the book, because it is always good to spur our minds to think more. It is easy to read and there are a lot of good stories and anecdotes. But as a counter-point, I felt the book used a lot of familiar stories to promote... familiar solutions. To say simply, "Be more like Netflix, Amazon, Google, and Southwest Airlines ... and less like *those other guys who weren't*" isn't anything new. Also, as a one-man project manager trying to tackle a single complex problem in my part of my company's project, I can't really just "be more creative".He devotes a considerable amount to avoiding catastrophic failures like the Space Shuttle Columbia and Everest-descent disasters and the danger of groupthink. But my work is not life-and-death, and the leap from "don't be like that" to being creative with developing my current communication project was a big one.Don't misinterpret me: The author stresses the importance that there is no *perfect solution* to every problem, and there is certainly no *perfect book* on being creative. But given the hyperbole on the cover (solve ANY problem with the BEST solution), I would say for me this book is not going to get me there. I did highlight a few spots to keep in my book notes / takeaways. And for that purpose it was a helpful book. Big picture, I did not feel this book was worth the investment I made in it.
