As a fan or Gordon Ramsey's, I thought this would be an interesting read...NOT! Extremely boring. Very little aboout his personal life. Mostly describes his various restaurants. I'm halfway thru the book & doubt I will finish it.

I've watched Chef Ramsey since he was on BBC doing Kitchen Nightmares. I've always seen him as this meticulous and passionate chef, but never thought how he became this larger-than-life character that we see on our TV's. In this book, no subject is off-limits. He is extraordinarily honest about his less than poor and humble beginnings. He talks about the mental, physical, emotional, and verbal abuse the whole family suffered from an alcoholic father. He was born in Glasgow, however, the family moved over and over because the father could never keep a job. He talks about getting his start in the kitchens in England and in France. During the book, I found a new respect for Chef Ramsey. He even goes into the heartache of having his younger brother hooked on heroin. I couldn't put this book down.

First of all I am a huge Gordon Ramsay fan. I absolutely love Kitchen Nightmares and I wish he was still making more episodes (I hope he returns to the show at some point). And so, being such a big fan, I really wanted to learn more about life and his background so that I understood the show better. And, in that respect, this book was a big help: when you see the misery that Ramsay grew up with--a father with a wandering eye who fancied himself a rock 'n roller, constant moves to new cities, poverty--you begin to understand why business success means so much to him. When he crashes down on a restaurant owner (particularly a family-owned restaurant), it's not because he's mean or psychotic, it's because he genuinely cares about the people he's trying to counsel and their families. He knows firsthand the misery of a crappy childhood and a failed business and he's trying to help them avoid those things. Moreover, Ramsay is trying to help restaurant owners rediscover their passion for cooking.All of these things became much more clear to me as I read this book. I have to say, however, that while I'm an American of Brit descent and grew up with Brit parents, jeez, Gordon, lighten up on the Brit talk! I had to look up dozens of words to even know what he was talking about, or at least guess at them based on context. There is a LOT of British slang in this book--a LOT. Also, the writing is pretty lame. I'm a professional writer and Ramsay desperately needed a good professional writer to ghost-write this book for him/with him. The editor for this book was sleeping on the job.I learned a lot from the book, but I think Ramsay has a much better book inside him. He is unafraid to reveal the truth of his past and he is unafraid to be vulnerable (a great quality) but you have to love him at the start of this book or you'll never finish it. It was a struggle for me. If I were reviewing this book as a meal, I'd say it was interesting for its ingredients and its concept, but lacking in its execution. It does not, however, lack anything in the way of passion.

I enjoyed this book a great deal. It explained why Gordon gets so het up sometimes...I watch him on all his shows and greatly prefer him on Master Chef junior, but reading about his life made me appreciate what has gone through, and why he is the way he is.

What's to say except am madly in love with Gordon Ramsay?!! haha His biography is written from the heart, like all else Gordon does! It isa VERY slim tome and it is written in simple, down-to-earth language, to which we may all relate, but this is not to say that Gordon isn't eloquent in how deeply and sincerely he expresses all he has felt and experienced, throughout his lifetime. I HIGHLY recommend this read to everyone - whether you are interested in cooking or not! This is a pared down account of his intriguing life - not a cook book! I LOVED it (being as objective as I can given my infatuation! hahaha)

I have always loved Gordon Ramsey. Even though he has a temper and uses bad language I still admire him. This book really opens up on the reason he is the hard driven man he is today. I respect how he has persevered through many hardships. He has remained a very successful in spite of all he had to endure. One thing for sure he has helped many along the way find their true purpose in preparing high quality food. If you cannot give it your best than leave the kitchen. Also I admire how he has taken his own hard earned money to help others succeed in their restaurants. Very enlightening book on the man Gordon Ramsey.

I read this book immediately on the heels of reading Marco Pierre White's "The Devil in the KItchen" and the two made a magnificent pair. You get the gossip from both sides and although I'm very partial due to my giant GR crush, I appreciated Gordon's book so much more. Why? Because he shows his vulnerability as a human being by digging deep into some very serious personal issues. White's book is definitely more about the food except, of course, when he pauses to trash a former colleague or employee or boast he HE was the first of celebrity chefs, not GR or anyone else for that matter. GR devotees see in him the tenderness that comes from being a battered kid hell-bent on escaping his past through food. Yes, the book is ghost-written but it matters not because I can hear Gordon's own voice in my head (swooooon) as I read. The book captures all of his wit and naughty humor and then some. Whether you are a GR fan, a chef or wannabe or just curious about this "squishy-faced" Scotsman we've come to know/love/hate, there is something for you in this book. A quick read with some great photos at end, I was surprised (and a little wistful) when I so quickly reached the last page.

His name was Mahatma Gandhi, considered as the father of independent India. I heard his words of wisdom from his own lips. His words were simple but spoken with the confidence of a man who proclaimed that his life was his message. One particularly became forever etched in my young mind. He said, "One must be the change one wishes to see in the world." What do we want to see in the world? We want to get rid of poverty and have material abundance. We want to get rid of suffering and have an abiding happiness, which seem to require a life rich in spirituality. I have tried to do that in my own humble way, as you will read in Code Name God.

As a skeptical scientist, I also had to find the scientific evidence to support that spirituality is essential for enduring happiness. We have tried to write a comprehensive book that transfers knowledge through an immersive "hands on" approach, where the reader is provided the necessary guidance and knowledge to develop working code for real-world cloud applications. Concurrent development of practical applications that accompanies traditional instructional material within the book further enhances the learning process, in our opinion. 
Through generous use of hundreds of figures and tested code samples, we have attempted to provide a rigorous "no hype" guide to cloud computing. It is expected that diligent readers of this book can use these exercises to develop their own applications on cloud platforms, such as those from Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft's Windows Azure. Review questions and exercises are provided at the end of each chapter so that the readers (students or instructors) can improve their understanding of the technologies conveyed. We adopted an informal approach to describing well-known concepts primarily because these topics are covered well in existing textbooks, and our focus instead is on getting the reader firmly on track to developing robust cloud applications as opposed to more theory.

About the Author
Arshdeep Bahga is a Research Scientist with Georgia Institute of Technology. His research interests include cloud computing and big data analytics. Arshdeep has authored several scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of cloud computing and big data. 

Vijay Madisetti is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Vijay is a Fellow of the IEEE, and received the 2006 Terman Medal from the American Society of Engineering Education and HP Corporation.

About the Author
Educated at Harvard and Cornell, Dr. Leo Beranek is an acoustical design consultant. Recent work includes several concert halls in Japan. In 1948 he co-founded Bolt, Beranek and Newman (now BBN Technologies) to provide consultation for major auditoriums. BBN also reduced jet noise, developed the ARPANET (internet forerunner), and founded Channel 5 among other achievements. Leo has won numerous awards and fellowships including AES, ASA and ASME gold medals, Presidential National Medal of Science, and ICA Lifetime Achievement in Science Award. He has published 13 books.

Tim Mellow was educated at Boundary Oak School and Lancing College before obtaining a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering and Electronics from the University of Dundee, Scotland, in 1985. A career as a Design engineer at BICC, Marconi, Thorn EMI, Racal, VTech, and Nokia followed. Recently, he co-founded Mellow Acoustics Ltd with Philip Trevelyan to develop high fidelity loudspeakers and amplifiers. Tim takes a keen interest in music and plays the piano. He appreciates technology that brings musical performances to life, especially those which can no longer be heard live.
