The basic premise is to eat RAW and low carb to cure Diabetes. The first half of the book gives the science of diabetes and various ways of eating, and justification for eating raw foods. The completely raw, vegetarian, low-carb diet that is advocated for the first few weeks is very difficult to follow though. It involves a lot of blendering, food-processing and dehydrating. The follow-up diet allows some cooked foods, but is still predominately raw. I've been eating about 60% raw since January 1st, and have noticed a nice drop in blood sugar levels, so I believe this diet works if one can "hack" it. I'm already a vegetarian, so the change to a raw, vegetable-based diet is not as hard for me as it might be for some. But I do like some cooked veggies, and some gluten-free baked breads. The book does cover some recommended supplements that Diabetics should take, but these are in the text and not offered as a quick-reference list as I'd like them to be. And the recipes are not for busy kitchen novices. A lot of prep is involved in most of them, as well as a lot of equipment. I recommend "Raw and Simple" by Judita Wignall. This book offers 100 easy recipes (with photos!) that I can make with only a blender and a nut (or coffee) grinder.
The title says "A 21 day+ Holistic Recovery Program" Where is the program? Not only is it never outlined, but when I called the Tree of Life Center to ask where to find it in the book, I was told there was none. I had to sign up for the $11,000 Tree of Life program to be given the particulars and outline!Yes, this book is incredibly dense with information about the latest in diabetes research, but when people do not have $11,000 or 3 weeks to be away from work, what are they supposed to do? Information that cannot be turned into practice is worthless. Where is a concise outline of WHAT people are supposed to DO for the 21 days? This book simply ends up presenting itself as an in depth advertisement for the real program in Patagonia, AZ, and yet you can infer by your title that the program is within the book, which it is NOT!As a holistic practitioner for 30 years and a sugar challenged individual for 20, I wanted to believe in your claims of a cure. Although well managed for most of those 20 years, things recently changed and I was ready for the major shifts in diet and consciousness that seemed to be the hallmark of your program. Upon receiving your 500+ page book and reviewing the contents, I quickly realized that there was NO outlined program. Without a GREAT deal of effort to synthesize all the information oneself into a program that can be followed, a reader will NOT find it here,If your "program" needs such individual attention, as explained by your Tree of Life Center staff, that it cannot be condensed into writing a practical every day, useable action plan, then, in my opinion, you should not use the extant title. Rather, I might suggest, "A 21+ day Holistic Recovery Program IN PATAGONIA, AZ for only $11,000".I have been a reader of your books for over 30 years, Dr. Cousens, and an admirer of your thoughts. Today, that has come to an end.
Got diabetes? This book will help you cure it if you follow the instructions. Following the advice in this book, I reduced by fasting blood sugar from a average of 144 to less than 100 in 2 weeks and an average of 85 for the last 60 days & NO medication. Great book, thanks Dr. Cousens!!!
BUYER BEWARE. Though this book is well foot-noted, it is based on very questionable research that really has no place in the field of nutrition. See my review on his other book Rainbow Green Live food cuisine. I won't repeat it here except to say that this man believes in "protits" (not misspelled) == somatids, which if you look in the medical online dictionary, says "somatids", a life form which is not bacterial, viral or fungal, but which instead belongs to a distinct domain unknown to modern science and medicine. The man who came up with that term was tried in his Native France for practicing medicine without a license, and his treatment was based on somatids.
